What Orchestration Actually Requires
Controlling AI effectively producing better outcomes than human-only development at comparable cost requires skills that are different from traditional software engineering skills and are not currently taught in most CS curricula, bootcamps, or engineering onboarding programmes. The first is problem decomposition for AI consumption. AI coding tools perform significantly better on well-scoped, precisely constrained subtasks than on broad, open-ended requests. An engineer who can decompose a complex feature into a sequence of precisely specified subtasks each with clear inputs, outputs, constraints, and success criteria will get dramatically better AI outputs than one who prompts with a high-level description and expects the AI to figure out the decomposition. This is a form of systems thinking that experienced engineers develop over years. It is not obvious to junior engineers and is not taught explicitly.The second skill is output evaluation under uncertainty. AI-generated code is often correct in ways that are easy to verify and wrong in ways that are difficult to detect subtle security vulnerabilities, edge case failures, architectural inconsistencies with the rest of the codebase, performance characteristics acceptable in test but problematic at production scale. Evaluating AI output requires holding a mental model of the system context and applying it critically to code you did not write. The third is failure attribution in AI-assisted systems. When a bug appears in a codebase that is 50% AI-generated, diagnosing whether it originated in AI-generated code, in the human code interfacing with it, or in the interaction between the two requires debugging reasoning that traditional tools did not anticipate. The AI has no accessible thought process explaining its outputs. The engineer must infer the AI's intent from the code itself.

What Engineering Education Has Not Caught Up With
Most CS curricula, bootcamps, and engineering onboarding programmes still teach software development as a primarily implementation-oriented discipline. These skills remain necessary you cannot effectively direct AI to build a secure authentication system without understanding what secure authentication requires. But they are no longer sufficient. The skills becoming central to the developer role problem decomposition for AI consumption, AI output evaluation, failure attribution in AI-assisted systems, and AI tool orchestration receive no formal treatment in most educational contexts.A 2025 NBER study found that AI-related education does not lose value when AI tools improve. The opposite is true: graduates with deeper understanding of AI systems, their failure modes, and their integration into software architectures command higher salaries and experience lower unemployment than graduates with general software skills alone.
